Is Braveheart a real story?
Braveheart is loosely based on the real William Wallace of Scotland. The main subject of Braveheart is widely accepted by historians as having existed and been a major part of the Battle of Stirling Bridge, but William Wallace's story has grown to legendary proportions in Scottish history.
Why is Braveheart so inaccurate?
In Braveheart, William Wallace is hanged by the English, then disemboweled while still alive. It is then that he calls out his final word: "FREEDOM!" This isn't accurate but, oddly, it's inaccurate

How much of Braveheart is historically accurate?
As gripping and entertaining as the film was, though,
it was not particularly historically accurate. While William Wallace certainly was a diehard Scottish patriot who fought tirelessly and furiously against English rule, Mel Gibson took some pretty extreme liberties with the facts when crafting his movie.
